Early estimates suggest that David Villa could be out for at least six months after suffering a fractured tibia in Barcelona’s 4-0 World Club Championship semi-final victory over Al Sadd.
Though the news represents a blow to Barcelona’s aspirations of glory on domestic, European and global fronts, the possibility that the striker won’t have fully recovered by the summer will most alarm European Championship holders Spain.
Whereas the 30-year-old had struggled to hold down a place for his club of late, actually making his first start in four games in Japan, he remains the undisputed first choice for his country, and was the tournament top scorer when they lifted the trophy four years ago.
Villa has had a testing time since joining Barcelona from Valencia after Spain’s World Cup win, as it swiftly became clear that he would be supporting Lionel Messi instead of leading the line, and he has recently fallen behind Alexis Sanchez in the pecking order.
If Villa fails to make it to Poland and Ukraine, replacing him will prove an unenviable task.
